On March 6, our co-organizers Cradlenet and A Sustainable Tomorrow launched a call to action urging the Nordic countries to adapt their political ambitions to create a region based on circular principles by 2035. Interest in the circular economy is greater than ever before. However, large-scale changes require ambitious and clear political guidance. Sign the call to action if you agree. During the Nordic Sustainability Expo, the signatures will be handed over to responsible politicians.

Carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by as much as 40% in the Nordic region by reducing extraction, production, and consumption of new materials. Applying circular principles to reduce these emissions is crucial to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, as all other climate measures are too slow. Therefore, the two organizations are now calling on the Nordic countries to establish a common goal to create a circular region.

"So far, Finland has the most ambitious goal and has committed to basing its economy on circular principles by 2035. Therefore, we suggest that Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden harmonize their ambitions with Finland's. To achieve net-zero emissions, it is crucial that we reduce or eliminate material-based emissions. The Nordic countries must adapt their circular ambitions to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement," explains Elin Bergman, COO of Cradlenet.

Interest in the circular economy is high among both businesses and households. However, large-scale changes require ambitious and clear political guidance. Businesses need clear guidelines to enable necessary long-term investments to develop circular value chains.

"Why should the Nordic countries have different goals and regulations? By having a common goal and plan for the circular economy, we make it easier for businesses that operate in all Nordic countries to, together with common forces, achieve the global climate goals," says Bo Nilsson, founder of A Sustainable Tomorrow.
